Gold Connector Myths

Do gold connectors affect tone? Simple answer: no.

Gold-plated jack connectors are excellent conductors of electricity as are nickel jack. The main job of the coating is to offer a prolonged resistance to tarnishing & corrosion, and gold is a fairly unreactive metal.

However, a principal called Galvanic Corrosion tells us that when two metals that are not the same are in contact, the rate of corrosion actually increases. Since all 1/4″ input/output jacks are nickel plated, using a gold connector may actually reduce the life of the jacks.

Nickel is a harder and more durable coating that will stand up to a lifetime of plugging in and out.

It’s for this reason that we use nickel-plated plugs.
